WordPress runs two different types of service. WordPress.com is the free blogging platform (although you can pay to add extras if you want). WordPress.org is the more complicated webhosting software you download to your PC to create a website from scratch.
This book is primarily for WordPress.org users.
If you’ve started a basic WordPress.com blogging page and just want to tart it up a bit, there’s nothing much here for you (with the exception a CSS coding primer for page layouts if you really want to go the programming route, rather than just choose from the 1000s of readymade site layouts available!). I was hoping for some guidance on incorporating more features, but this book just doesn’t go there.
If you use WordPress.com, and can post a blog or insert a link you don’t need this book. If you’re unfamiliar with webhosting and want to brave WordPress.org, this book is a good enough place to start.

As an idea, the Dummies series is excellent. Unfortunately, there are many authors who seem to exploit the premise that books for beginners are easy money. This book is an excellent example.
Most irritating is the shocking amount of filler that appears. Rather than getting to the point, the (american) author insists on a gratingly over-familiar style which seems intent on filling up 400 pages or so, even if that means resorting to such nonsense as the following.
“The Loop. I’m not talking about America’s second-largest downtown business district, originating at the corner of State and Madison streets in Chicago. I could write about some interesting experiences I’ve had there… but that would be a different book.”
The useful content could be condensed into about 50 pages. Alternatively, stick to the 400 pages and give some genuinely useful exercises and examples, rather than telling us about “showing the love” or suggesting that we say “WordPress Widgets are Wonderful” ten times.

Suffering from the same over-optimistic, saccharine tone adopted by most “Dummies” guides, this book just can’t make up its mind what it wants to be. It covers relatively straightforward topics in too much detail then glosses over the meaty stuff. The layout of the book doesn’t lend itself to large amounts of code and tables, so it becomes frustrating to follow instructions that spill over several pages.
I’ve found the online tutorials provided by ThemeShaper more helpful. There’s also a useful introduction to WordPress by Brian Wood on Adobe’s Dreamweaver Developer Centre (you don’t need Dreamweaver to read the tutorial).
With better editing and a more helpful balance of content, this could have been a halfway useful book. But if you want to delve into the complexities of WordPress (and I’m beginning to ask myself why I ever did), there’s got to be a better all-in-one reference work. I’ve just yet to find it.

There are lots of WordPress books, this book cannot be all you’ll ever need, no book can be. But! 840 pages of 8 books in one by 5 writers it certainly covers beginners and intermediate. It will give a very valuable grounding in WordPress. I haven’t even read it all, but so far it’s ACE!
Use the amazon “Look Inside” feature to see the contents, amazing! This feature doesn’t seem to work in the Opera browser though. I could go on but you need to see for yourself.
The only other book I want to get is “WordPress Web Design For Dummies” another big tomb written by the main writer – Lisa Sabin-Wilson.
I don’t understand why more more people haven’t purchased and reviewed it here on Amazon, they should! Perhaps they’ve been disappointed by other WordPress books as I have.

The one you wanr. I’ve blogged for 11 years on WordPress for 3. This feels like two books for the price of one. Great for th novice blogger or not, just as useful if you want introductory or advance lessons in coding.
