Having not used WordPress previously and not been involved with web based technologies in recent years, I found the WordPress Bible really well structured and thought out. It takes you through every stage from installing to running modified themes etc and is the ideal book or manual to have by your side. Its not too techie and is easy to understand with well written instructions and illustrations to help you achieve what you want. Well worth the money.

Gives an excellent all-round introduction and provides a good reference. The only thing I could wish for, personally, would be a better guide to writing skins, but I realise that, for WordPress, this would require vastly more space.

I don’t think I am reading the same book as the other two reviewers.
I have worked in computers for 30 years and this is the worst technical book I have experienced. Chapter 1 is an over the top “gush” about how wonderful WordPress is but one might look to Chapter 2 to see why that is true. No, Chapter 2 is about how to refine your WordPress installation – not how to set it up in the first place. Its quite complicated to set up on your own computer, as it involves WordPress to work seamlessly with PHP and MySql and I think this needs tackling in detail if this book is at aimed at newbies. Chapter 3 I would have hoped would be how to set up a simple website, with subsequent Chapters expanding on that theme but thats not how it is organised.
My webhost does facilitate a one click WordPress installation, so I have had a little play there. It seems to me WordPress is only “easy” if you can find a “theme / skin” that suits your purpose. One of the reviewers talks about “skins” and I think if you want a very personal WordPress site you will have to write your own skin. This book is no help there.
Can’t comment on how useful this is as a reference.
If you are buying a reference book I’d forgotten how important it is not to buy from what it says on the cover. If you need a WordPress book, flick through the pages of the competition, and check they really are aimed at your experience level and will take on to the level of experience you want. I’d be surprised if you’d choose “WordPress Bible”.
